This blog post explains everything you need to know about the latest version of SOHODOX. When we released SOHODOX version 9 some weeks back, due to technical issues we could not release an update setup for it (this would have enabled users of older versions of SOHOODX to upgrade to the latest version). We are now ready with the Update Setup and since we had to make quite a few changes since the release of v9, we are calling this version v9.1. In the text below when we refer to v9 we are referring to the latest v9.1.

The release of Sohodox 9 affects users in some important ways. The effect varies, depending on whether you are an existing Sohodox customer using version 6.1.0.5 and above or are still evaluating the software. Let’s look at these implications…

IMPORTANT :
Upgrade setup blocks upgrading to version 9 if your MainDB is MS Access based
Older versions of Sohodox use an MS Access based MainDB. However since the release of SOHODOX version 9, we highly recommend that you use MS SQL Server 2012 Express Edition (available free) as the database for SOHODOX.

Therefore before upgrading to version 9, you must…

  • Download and install MS SQL Server 2012 Express Edition as per these instructions.
  • After this you must download and install the SOHODOX Update Setup. This will upgrade your installation to version 9.1 and also convert your current MS Access based SOHODOX DB to MS SQL Server Express. Instructions for this are here.

Microsoft has recently dropped support for Windows XP and will not be releasing any security updates for it. Due to this and the fact that SQL Server Express Edition will not work on XP, we have dropped support for Windows XP as well.

“I’m still evaluating Sohodox ”
If you’re evaluating Sohodox and have not yet purchased licenses, then you can continue with your Free Trial as usual. When you purchase Sohodox licenses, you will have to download and install the update setup for Version 9 and apply the registration key that we send you. If you prefer to try the latest version, please contact us for instructions about upgrading your current installation to v9.1

“I am already a Sohodox customer”
In that case please read through this carefully…

Why should I upgrade to Sohodox version 9 ?
Sohodox 9 is one of our biggest releases with a whole bunch of exciting new features which make it an even more efficient tool to manage your documents!! An update setup to upgrade your existing installations is now available. Check out the newly added features here.

Will upgrading to version 9 erase my existing data?
No – it won’t! When you upgrade to version 9, you will need to download the update setup, install it and run it. The update setup will upgrade your Sohodox DB but it will not touch your data. This means you do not lose your data. As always it is a good practice to back up your Sohodox DBs before any Sohodox upgrade. Remember to back up the Main DB as well as all the Data DBs (if any).

How do I go about upgrading to version 9 ?
That depends on whether your Maintenance Subscription is currently active or it has ended. If the Maintenance Subscription is currently active, you just need to download and install the update setup, run it, restart Sohodox and continue using it as usual (you must update the Sohodox installation on each machine). But if your Maintenance Subscription has come to an end, you will need to purchase Maintenance Subscriptions – as many as the number of Sohodox licenses you own. You can purchase Maintenance Subscriptions by contacting us at sales@itaz.com. Once you purchase the Maintenance Subscriptions, we will email you the registration key and the link to download the update setup. You can then download and install the update setup, run it, restart Sohodox and continue using it as usual. It’s that simple!

As promised, we will be making an exception to our one year free upgrade policy because of the unexpected delay in release the Update Setup for SOHODOX v9. So if your maintenance subscription was active as on March 13 2014, you will be able to upgrade to SOHODOX v9, free of cost.

What if I choose not to upgrade to Sohodox 9?
You can still carry on using Sohodox as usual, but in case you face an issue requiring support from our side, one of the first things we would ask you to do would be to upgrade your version to the latest one. Often, that by itself is sufficient to resolve the issue. So it is always beneficial to keep your Sohodox updated to the latest version.

My Maintenance Subscription ended on (or before) 12th Mar 2014. I want to upgrade to Sohodox 9. How can I do so?
If your Maintenance Subscription came to an end on or before 12th March 2014, you will need to purchase as many Maintenance Subscriptions as the number of Sohodox licenses you own.

Note for both – existing customers as well as users evaluating Sohodox :
Please do not use the Full Setup to update an existing installation of Sohodox – always use the Update Setup. Also, you must not uninstall an existing version and attempt to install the latest version of Sohodox using the Full Setup. This will *not* work. Download the update setup and click here to upgrade know how to upgrade SOHODOX.
